Our Week

This week was all about insects!

  • We started our week by learning what an insect is – a bug that has 6 legs, a three-part body, antennas, and often wings.
  • To put what we learned into practice we completed a bug sort, working to identify which bugs were insects. The kids were mostly fascinated looking through bug photographs and only slightly grossed out on occasion.
  • We then worked to create a simple, yet beautiful, dragonfly from paper, gems, and a popsicle stick.
  • One of our new favorite activities this week has been our sticker art at our easel. To bring this fun into our more structured learning, we completed a syllable worksheet that used sticker dots to illustrate how many syllables were in each word.
  • On Tuesday, we worked our fine motor skills by creating a bead caterpillar on a leaf. This activity paired wonderfully with reading โ€œThe Very Hungry Caterpillarโ€ by Eric Carle.
  • To explore symmetry, the kids used scissors to cut along a folded piece of paper, opening it to reveal a butterfly! We then put paint inside the butterfly on one wing, closed it, then reopened it to see the beautiful symmetrical design we had made.
  • We worked really hard this week on number sense. The kids completed a caterpillar building math activity, a tens frame worksheet, and practiced reading our bug hunt counting books to the class!! I was very impressed with their work during both of these activities.
  • We also completed a fly/crawl sort during the week and separated our insects by the number of syllables in their names.
  • For some imaginative fun, the kids used Play-doh to create their own insects. I was impressed by the amount of detail they used!
  • During circle we continue to practice singing the alphabet, identifying letters Aa-Zz, practicing all letter sounds, counting in sequence to 100, identifying numbers 1-10, practicing spelling names, rhyming words, separating words into syllables, and reviewing any new skills learned throughout the week.
